An Alaskan Brown Bear photographed at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.

A few years ago, I traveled to Alaska on assignment and found some extra time to explore part of the state. I was based out of Anchorage and on a day trip, I headed south on Alaska 1, the Seward Highway.

Leaving the city, travelers quickly pass through Chugach State Park and pass by the tip of Turnagain Arm. Continuing south, I discovered the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center located at mile 79 on Seward Highway, Portage, AK 99587.

I parked the car and hiked up a trail and where I came upon a couple of brown bears playing in a nearby stream. I took several photos as the bears splashed around, unsure if they were playing with each other, or simply taking a cool bath. The play time stopped after a few minutes and one of the bears disappeared over a little berm. To my delight, one of the bears found a nearby log and settled in for an afternoon nap.

While the photo above is my favorite of the group, I did submit one to National Wildlife where it was posted as the Photo of the Week. The page no longer exists, but thanks to web.archive.org, I have a snapshot of the page and a URL of the post to share.
